This failing composite restoration allowed caries to form under the restoration and cracks to form in the unsupported tooth structure around the poorly sealed composite. The second photo shows the tooth during biomimetic restoration. Caries and cracks have been treated and the dentin was sealed using immediate dentin sealing and resin coating.

A step above the rest
A natural tooth is connected side to side, top to back and front to bottom around the pulp chamber. This connection allows it to withstand the forces of occlusion while remaining resilient to decay and cracks. Biomimetic restorations are free from gaps and cracks into dentin because the bond is a similar strength to which a natural tooth is connected (30-50 MPa). This biomimetic bond allows biomimetic restorations to outperform traditional amalgam and composite restorations.
